For the Cake:

  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

For the Chocolate Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 5 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Instructions:

For the Cake:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  1. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  2. Add the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix on medium speed until well combined, about 2 minutes.
  3. Reduce the mixer speed to low and carefully add the boiling water. Mix until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin, but that’s okay.
  4. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for about 10 minutes. Then, remove the cakes from the pans and place them on a wire rack to cool completely.

For the Chocolate Frosting:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the cocoa powder and powdered sugar to remove any lumps.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat the softened butter until it’s creamy and smooth.
  3. Gradually add the cocoa powder and powdered sugar mixture to the butter, alternating with the milk. Start and finish with the dry ingredients.
  4. Mix on low speed until the frosting is well combined. Add the vanilla extract and beat for another 2 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  5. Once the cakes are completely cool, place one of the cakes on a serving plate or cake stand.

  1. Spread a layer of chocolate frosting on top of the first cake.
  2. Carefully place the second cake on top of the frosting layer.
  3. Use the remaining frosting to cover the top and sides of the cake. You can be as creative as you like with the frosting, adding swirls, patterns, or decorations as desired.
  4. Slice, serve, and savor the rich, chocolaty goodness!

Enjoy your homemade chocolate cake! Whether it’s for a special occasion or a simple treat, this cake is sure to satisfy your chocolate cravings.
